On behalf of the IASPM 2021 Organizing Committee, we are pleased to invite you to the 21st Biennial Conference of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM) to be held in Daegu, South Korea on 6-10 July 2021.
Having been held every two years since 1981, the IASPM is currently one of the planet's most prestigious international conferences of popular music studies. It will be a great opportunity for participants to share the latest information and knowledge in ever-diversifying fields of popular music.
It is only the second time the conference is held in the continent of Asia after the first in 1997. In recent years, Asia has become a rising force in global popular music spearheaded by host country’s favourite cultural export, K-pop. It might sound premature to claim the 21st century to be the “Asian century” in popular music. However, it looks very likely that the presence of Asian pop in global popular music will grow bigger and bigger. In this respect, it is high time a Asian country to host the IASPM conference gathering students of popular music from all corners of the world to witness the creative milieu and feel its vibrations.
IASPM has always been committed to the cause of diversity. Daegu conference shares the commitment, and promises to represent a great diversity of voices in popular music studies across a wide range of topics and issues. The IASPM 2021 conference will provide a great place for participants of diverse colours, genders, ethnicities to exchange ideas and engage in lively discussions in a friendly and egalitarian atmosphere.
The theme of the IASPM 2021 is “Climates of Popular Music”. Climate has been a rather under-researched topic in popular music studies. Since the outbreak of COVID-19 and its impact on our relationship with popular music, however, it seems the time is ripe for speculating on the question of climate in its various guises in relation to popular music. We have invited respected academics and renowned music industry figures for our keynotes and plenary sessions to share their thoughts on and experiences of the issue. We hope these events will be memorable and inspiring for all those who participated.
Unbeknownst to the outside world, some of the highlights of the past IASPM conferences have been the colourful and exhilarating evening programmes. These are the occasions where academics and experts from all over the world let their hair down and become one in an affectual community. The IASPM 2021 is keen to follow this tradition and try our best to fill each and every evening with diverse and interesting programmes.
Weatherwise, the host city Daegu is known as one of the hottest places in Korea. These days, however, the city is better known as a cultural “hotspot” since a plethora of cultural events are staged throughout the city for all summer long. In the summer of 2021, we expect temperatures in Daegu to increase a degree or two thanks to the heats generated from the passionate and enthusiastic IASPM gathering. While heats are often associated with climate change these days, we believe these heats to be positive, an healthy outcome of exchange of human energy, that has no concerns about carbon footprint.
